It follows Billie Chase (Jenna Elfman,   Dharma & Greg), a San Francisco newspaper film critic in her 30s, who after a hard breakup with her boss and ex-boyfriend, James (Grant Show, Melrose Place, Dynasty) meets Zack (Jon Foster), an aspiring chef in his 20s, at a local bar and they have a one-nightstand. Jenna soon finds herself "accidentally" pregnant and decides to keep the baby... and the guy.

Thanks to this unexpected arrival, Billie and Zack have agreed to live together platonically, since the only place that Zack has to call home is his van.

While Billie receives encouragement and advice from her alcoholic best friend Olivia (Ashley Jensen) and her conventional, younger, married sister Abby (Lennon Parham), she must simultaneously deal with James, who now finds himself jealous of Zack, while also dealing with Zack's freeloading friend Davis (Nicolas Wright), and others, when they start turning her place into a frat house, leaving Billie to question whether she is living with a boyfriend, a roommate, or a second child to raise.

What follows is a laugh-out-loud adventure of mismatched lifestyles, awkward moments, and the ups and downs of modern relationships. With a quirky group of friends and a meddling boss in the mix, Billie’s unconventional family keeps life unpredictable and outrageously funny.

The series was created by writer-producer Claudia Lonow, who is best known for her portrayal of Diana Fairgate on CBS’s long running series Knots Landing and was based on the book of the same name by Mary F. Pols.
