Episode One: Police break down the door of Eddie and Manda Millers' (Stephen Graham, Christine Tremarco) family home. Teenage son Jamie (Owen Cooper) is arrested for the murder of his classmate Katie (Emilia Holiday) and is taken in for questioning, but insists he's done nothing wrong.

Episode Two: Police DI Bascombe (Ashley Walters) and DS Misha Frank (Faye Marsay) look for answers — and the weapon — at Jamie's school. They can't get any leads from his friends, until Bascombe's son Adam (Amari Bacchus) offers to help.

Episode Three: Jamie meets with a psychologist (Erin Doherty). He's reluctant to speak at first, but eventually he opens up about his complex feelings towards Katie.

Episode Four: 13 months later - on his birthday, Eddie takes Manda and daughter Lisa (Amelie Pease) out for the day to try to celebrate like everything is normal, but a series of upsetting events threatens to send the family over the edge.
