Peter Christopher (Michael Callan), a junior executive and a confirmed bachelor who very much enjoys the single life, is blocked from professional advancement at his company by not having a wife. Peter's boss, baby-food manufacturer Max Brahms (Jack Collins), is, because of his product, a strong believer in marriage and family.

After talking with a young hat check girl, Greta Patterson (Patricia Harty), Peter asks her to pose as his "occasional" wife at company functions. In return, he agrees to set  Greta up in an apartment two floors above his own in a Manhattan building.

All sorts of crazy situations occur as they try their best to pull of their scheme without getting caught.
