WHISPERING SMITH – THE COMPLETE SERIES + BONUS (NBC 1961) HARD TO FIND!!! Audie Murphy, Sam Buffington, Guy Mitchell
One of the rarest and most sought after of all television westerns, Whispering Smith featured Audie Murphy, America's most decorated soldier in WWII, as a Denver-based railroad private eye in the Old West. Many of the episodes were based on actual Denver police cases, and Smith must use all his wits, as well as his skill with a Colt .45 to bring justice to those who would defraud the railroad.
“Dragnet on horseback.” That’s how star Audie Murphy described Whispering Smith when the series debuted on NBC in 1961. It is an appropriate analogy. Many of the episodes in this post-Civil War police procedural set in Denver are based on real cases, and Murphy narrates them Joe Friday-style.
His superior John Richards was played by Sam Buffington, his partner George Romack by Guy Mitchell.
The show had a great cast of guest stars, including Dallas patriarch Jim Davis, Gilligan’s Island Skipper Alan Hale Jr., James Best (Rosco on The Dukes of Hazzard), and Get Smart’s “Chief” Edward Platt playing…a chief of police, F-Troop’s Forrest Tucker, Les Tremayne, Marie Windsor, Alan Mowbray, Minerva Urecal, and Marjorie Reynolds.
Unfortunately for fans, NBC silenced Whispering Smith after the September 18, 1961 broadcast. Only 20 of the 26 produced episodes aired on the network during its brief four-month run.
***One of the remaining six unaired shows (The Interpreter) subsequently went missing and was excluded from the retail DVD release in 2010. It was later found in the Library of Congress. That episode is included in this set, making it the complete series on 6 DVDs!***
Bonus: Also included is the documentary Medal of Honor: The Audie Murphy Story - The complete story of one of America's true heroes, Audie Murphy, who received the Medal of Honor for his bravery under fire in WWII, as well as 32 other medals including the Silver Star and the Distinguished Service Award.
