Based on the hit British sitcom Keep It in the Family, this beloved ABC comedy follows the zany exploits of overprotective father and San Francisco cartoonist Henry Rush (Ted Knight, The Mary Tyler Moore Show) and his warm but sharp-witted wife Muriel (Nancy Dussault). Just when they think they've found the perfect way to keep their growing family close, they discover they've invited a whole new level of chaos into their lives!

Their daughters—street-smart brunette Jackie (Deborah Van Valkenburgh) and bubbly blonde bombshell Sara (Lydia Cornell)—may be ready to spread their wings, but Henry and Muriel aren't about to let them fly too far. So when an apartment opens up in their San Francisco row house, the Rushes jump at the chance to keep their girls near. But between Sara’s flirtatious nature, Jackie’s independent streak, and the well-meaning but bumbling antics of their ever-present houseguest Monroe Ficus (Jim J. Bullock), Henry soon realizes that his "perfect" plan may be driving him completely over the edge!

During its second season, the series' principal stories were focused around Muriel's late-in-life pregnancy. Henry's niece April (Deena Freeman) comes from Delaware to live with the Rush family. The season concludes with Muriel giving birth to a son, Andrew (later played regularly by twins William and Michael Cannon from 1983 to 1984).

Other regular characters included Muriel’s mother Iris Martin (Audrey Meadows); Henry’s boss Arthur Wainwright (Hamilton Camp) and Henry’s father Huey (Ray Middleton).

Production was cancelled by ABC after 63 episodes, but carried on in Syndication for 66 additional episodes.

In late 1985, several changes were made before production started for Season 6. The show's title was changed to The Ted Knight Show (not to be confused with the short-lived 1978 CBS show of the same name, and the premise and setting were altered.

Henry retires from drawing Cosmic Cow and, along with Muriel and Andrew (Joshua Goodwin), moves to Marin County where he buys a share of a local newspaper and becomes its editor. Monroe joins the Rushes and takes a job with Henry's paper as a reporter. Actress Pat Carroll played the role of Hope Stinson, who owns the majority share of the newspaper and serves as a foil for Henry. In addition, the Rushes hire a live-in nanny, played by Lisa Antille.

The revamped show was scheduled to resume production when Knight, who had been battling colon cancer since 1985, died on August 26, 1986.

Too Close for Comfort is a must have addition to your DVD collection. It delivers laugh-out-loud moments, heartwarming family dynamics, and the unforgettable comedic genius of Ted Knight.
