FLYING NUN THE – THE COMPLETE SERIES (ABC 1967-70) RARE! Sally Field, Madelaine Sherwood, Alejandro Rey, Marge Redmond, Shelley Morrison
Based on the book The Fifteenth Pelican by Tere Rios this situation comedy followed the adventures of Sister Bertrille (Sally Field). Once, plain old Elsie Ethrington, this bright, exuberant young novice with the Order of the Sisters of San Tanco soon came to brighten the lives of all at the ancient convent, situated on a hilltop near San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Sister’s knack for finding trouble was always overshadowed by her sincere desire to do good and benefit her community.
Not the least of Sister Bertrille’s many attributes were that she had the ability to fly. How? Well, “when lift + thrust is greater than load + drag, any object can fly”, claimed Sister Bertrille. And this included herself – primarily because she weighed so little. Whenever a stiff wind caught her starched coronet, she became airborne. Unfortunately, her aerodynamics were not always pleasant. Occasionally Sister Bertrille would get dunked in the ocean, be thrusted into the midst of unlikely goings-on, almost shot down as an enemy aircraft, and once had a pelican fall in love with her.
Sister Bertrille got along well with everyone at the convent San Tanco, especially the wise and humorous Sister Jacqueline (Marge Redmond), Sister Sixto (Shelley Morrison), the Puerto Rican nun who fought a running battle with the English language and Sister Ana (Linda Dangcil), another young novice. The least impressed was her stern but caring, conservative Mother Superior (Madelaine Sherwood), the somber but gentle woman who runs the convent.
Sister Bertrille was also admired by Carlos Ramirez (Alejandro Rey), the rich, local casino owner and playboy. Ramirez was an orphan raised by the nuns, and though his is a "sinful" life by comparison to their ideals, he still maintains his gratitude, helping them whenever he can. This constantly leads him to get swept, usually against his will, into Sister Bertrille's zany schemes, which she concocts with alarming frequency.
