THE PROMISE...to love each other forever but the next time he won't even know who she is.
Two college students, Michael Hillyard (Stephen Collins) is from a rich background and Nancy McAllister (Kathleen Quinlan) is from a poor one. They fall in love and decide to get married despite his wealthy mother's (Beatrice Straight) disapproval.
Then, minutes before their wedding they are involved in a terrifying car accident that severely disfigures Nancy's face and a cruel deception that will separate Michael and Nancy forever. His mother offers to pay for the necessary surgery she needs, but only if the girl agrees to stay out of his life permanently.
When Michael awakens from a coma his mother Marion tells him that Nancy died in the accident. Eventually each pursues new lives -- Marion sends Nancy to California and undergoes a series of successful surgeries to repair her face. Once healed, she changes her name to Marie Adamson and becomes a successful photographer. Michael becomes a successful architect within his family's business, designing multimillion-dollar skyscrapers.
When Michael's company takes a contract to design a building in San Francisco it leads to an unexpected reunion proving that nothing -- and no one -- can keep them apart as they keep their promise to never to say good-bye.
