Five days before Christmas, disillusioned globetrotting journalist Tom Langdon (Dermot Mulroney) boards a transcontinental train in D.C., bound for Los Angeles, where he will be meeting his long-distance girlfriend for the holidays.
In fulfillment of a promise to his departed father, who had an affinity for locomotives, Langdon takes the train in order to write a story about the journey. He soon finds himself in the company of a diverse group of travelers with whom he will spend the next four days in close quarters, including: Hollywood Producer Max Powers (Danny Glover); Max's script doctor Eleanor (Kimberly Williams-Paisley); busybody Agnes (Joan Cusack) and young lovers Julie (Kirsten Zien) and Steve (Anthony Konechny).
When, to their tremendous surprise, Tom and Eleanor discover that each is on the train, everyone on-board soon becomes privy to their past. The pair were journalists together years ago and very much a couple for six years, until one day when Eleanor walked away, seemingly without explanation.
Thrown together again, neither knows quite knows what to do. As the train chugs its way across the country, each passenger's story begins to come to light, and Tom, eager to recount the story of this trip, is right there as each one unfolds. He is also there to see the love he lost all those years ago and soon, Eleanor begins to soften towards him, at last revealing the reason she had left him.
An unexpected snow drift in the Rockies brings the trip to abrupt halt in freezing temperatures that could mean disaster for all on-board. With no cell or radio communication possible, Tom and Eleanor set out, bravely facing the elements together, in search of assistance.
When they return with a group of locals bearing all the supplies needed until the train can get moving again, each has rediscovered in the other the opportunity for love they were certain had passed them by.
Hallmark Hall of Fame teleflim based on the novel by David Baldacci.
